The beach was first discovered by Spanish explorers in the 16th century, and it was later named after the shingles that covered its sand. Today, the beach is a popular tourist destination for visitors to Puerto Vallarta who enjoy spending time on the water and sunbathing on the soft sand.

The beach is located a few miles north of downtown Puerto Vallarta, just off of Highway 20. To get there, take exit 189 and head west on Calle 10. Drive about 1.5 miles until you reach a three-way intersection. Take a left onto Avenida de la Playa and continue driving until you reach the beach. Parking can be found along Calle 10 nearby or in lot 4 close to the beach itself.

The beach is well-maintained and features several places to rent umbrellas, sun loungers, and chairs as well as food vendors selling everything from ice cream to tacos. Facilities at the beach include restrooms, showers, and a playground for children.
